English version:
Ignorance of English at the President's Office
Although one might think that after having lived for four years in Slovakia, one is slowly getting used to the unprofessionalism of some Slovak civil servants, this fact until today still shocks me, especially as it occurs even at the highest level of government.
Recently, while gathering some information, I landed by mere chance on the pages of the Office of the President of the Slovak Republic, where in a certain section I noticed an overt nonsense, concerning the name of the Ambassador of the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Slovakia. The text quotes her name to be “Mrs Married to Daphne Bergsma”, where apparently “Married to” has been erroneously interpreted as being a part of her first name. Probably it was a hasty cut-and-paste job, unfortunately without understanding the meaning of the expression being “married to”, that has lead to this silly mistake.
What can one say? Only perhaps, that when reading web-pages of the Slovak ministries – though not exclusively; even some of the Slovak Embassies, e.g. in London are interesting – one cannot help but chuckle and be amazed, that one cannot find people, capable enough to perform his or her task without a quality deficiency. My feeling tells me, however, that Slovakia has more than enough capable people, the problem seems to occur in the capability of those, who have to hire them first.
From the outside it appears, that for the meantime it shall be only an exception, when a fully able person is to enter a post within the ranks of government – especially if to deal with (re)presenting Slovakia abroad.
